The company is still firmly grounded on the values of its founder Johann: Relocating or even moving to another country is completely out of the question. We are highly aware of our social responsibility towards our region and employees and providing permanent workplaces is one of our highest priorities. Over 40 years of Artistic & Technical Innovation

With 30 years of experience, Engineer Johann Pomberger started his own frame company in 1984, and quickly added optical’s very first 5-axis CnC Mill. Inventing the first laminated acetate “color blocks” in the mid 1900’s, Johann’s son Hans Peter still carefully designs each block using proprietary manufacturing technology. Johann’s grand-son Jürgen Pomberger now runs the growing company today in Goisern, Austria. Johann von Goisern thrives as a third-generation optical manufacturer that still leads in technical innovation and design, with their signature color blocks that deepen the color, texture and luminosity of premium acetate.

  • 3000 color options: Every carefully designed JvG laminated color block is completely unique for each model. Each model has 5 color sets, resulting in almost 3000 color options, the most of any medium sized frame company. Bespoke frames can be made using any of those JvG colors with any model.
  • Deep acetate stock: Johann von Goisern pre-buys a 5-year supply of acetate for each color block, storing an astonishing 22 tons. This huge stock ensures there are no color variations between batches, and reduces back-order delays. The benefit is frames may be replaced promptly with exact color matching while other brands may wait months.
  • Custom hinges: Johann von Goisern’s made in Austria hinges are thicker with a proprietary built-in tilt angle to invisibly apply proper pantoscopic tilt. This JvG innovation reduces adjusting, eliminates panto issues, ensures consistency among multiple pairs, and reduces breakage. This exceptional level of quality is distinguished every time the temples fold, as they align perfectly with no crossed swords.
  • Pioneer of 8 mm thick Acetate: Experienced Opticians know that block-cut acetate is far superior to injected molded eyewear. But most block-cut eyewear is made from 4mm think sheets, which are then 2-axis routed while flat, and thermo-formed to add all face-form and base curve. This common manufacturing type is frequently indicated by clear nose pad extensions.
  • As the pioneer in a 5-axis CnC mills, JvG in contrast fabricates the frame using very thick 8 mm+ acetate blocks, which are then 3d shaped to form much of the shape and curves with less thermo-forming. This also allows for greater reinforcement in critical areas like the bridge and corners, offering greater strength and fewer adjustments. It also adds varied dimension for enhanced color depth. The frame color extending through the entire nose pad extension is a key JvG detail that highlights their pioneering quality & workmanship.
